Where the Pacific meets the ancient science of Wing Chun — a living tradition carried unbroken from Ip Man’s Hong Kong to the shores of Vancouver Island.

A Living Art on
the West Coast

West Coast Sunny Tang Wing Chun is Victoria’s home of traditional Wing Chun Kung Fu — taught in direct lineage from Grand Master Sunny Tang (Dun Wah), himself a student of the legendary Ip Man and Moy Yat in Hong Kong.

Our school offers a precise, structured curriculum within a clean, welcoming environment. Whether you are stepping onto the training floor for the first time or deepening a lifetime of practice, you will find a community rooted in respect, discipline, and genuine transmission of the art.

Classes are led by Sifu Mark Watson, certified directly by Grand Master Sunny Tang, ensuring the integrity of the lineage is preserved in every lesson taught on Vancouver Island.

Grand Master
Sunny Tang

Born in Hong Kong in 1946, Sunny Tang began his Wing Chun training in 1960 under two of the art’s greatest figures — Ip Man and Moy Yat. His training was forged in the direct tradition of the Ip Man school at a time when the grandmaster himself was still alive and teaching.

Tang emigrated to England in 1971 to open his first school, then came to Canada in 1973 — becoming one of Wing Chun’s earliest and most important pioneers on Canadian soil. His Toronto school grew into a chain of ten centres spanning the country.

Beyond Wing Chun, Grandmaster Tang has represented Canada on the world stage in Wushu, founding Wushu Canada in 1993 and serving as team leader at multiple Pan American and World Championships. All black and gold sash certifications in the West Coast Sunny Tang system are granted personally by the Grandmaster himself.

A Complete
Martial Science

Wing Chun is not a collection of techniques — it is a coherent science of body mechanics, spatial awareness, and responsive force. The curriculum progresses through forms that build upon each other, developing the practitioner from the ground up.

01

Siu Lim Tao

The “little idea” form — the foundation of Wing Chun structure. All techniques, angles, and energy are seeded here.

02

Chum Kiu

The “seeking the bridge” form introduces footwork, turning, and the integration of body mass into techniques.

03

Biu Jee

The “thrusting fingers” form — advanced recovery techniques, extreme-angle striking, and emergency responses.

04

Muk Yan Jong — Wooden Dummy

116 movements practiced against the wooden dummy train the practitioner to redirect force, apply correct angles, and condition the striking surfaces of the body.

05

Chi Sau — Sticky Hands

The living heart of Wing Chun training. Chi Sau develops tactile sensitivity, reflexive response, and the ability to feel and redirect incoming force.

Luk Dim Boon Kwun — Dragon Pole

The six-and-a-half-point pole form. A long-range weapon that extends Wing Chun’s principles into powerful, explosive striking and sweeping techniques.

Baat Jaam Do — Butterfly Swords

Twin short blades that mirror the hands of Wing Chun — the highest weapon form in the system, reserved for advanced practitioners.

Wing Chun strives for the development of the total person. The extent to which one pursues that goal depends on the individual.

Efficiency

The shortest path. Direct force. No wasted movement. Wing Chun’s genius is economy.

Sensitivity

Through Chi Sau, the practitioner learns to listen with the body — to respond before thought.

Structure

Correct alignment transfers force with integrity. The body becomes a unified instrument.

Integrity

The school is a community of mutual respect — on the training floor and beyond it.
